Obscure Black C-List Actors: Bumper Robinson
It is my pleasure and duty to profile an obscure black c-list actor or actress every Friday. When it comes to black actors only Denzel and Halle, for example, are a-list, most others, like Regina King or Malik Yoba, are b-list. The c-listers though, they just don’t get their due, and I know most of their work and ALL of their names. When any of these people die ONLY Jet magazine will report it. I’ve dreamed of sharing this knowledge for so, so long…
Although he’s updated his look, that’s Lawrence “Bumper” Robinson (as an aside, avoid involving yourself with grown men who still go by childhood names, trust me). He always played recurring characters off to the sidelines in sitcoms. Do you remember him as “Clarence ‘The So Fine’” on Amen? Or maybe as Laura Winslow’s boyfriend Daniel on Family Matters? He was Jada Pinkett’s ultra-Christian boyfriend Dorian on Different World after it jumped the shark, and the mail guy who had an overzealous crush on Queen Latifah on Living Single. If you’ve never seen any of these shows shame on you. I’m not sure whats going on with his “career,” but that’s what the c-list is about.
thembi really does know the full bios of EVERY c-list (and d-list) black actor, she’s like rainman in this regard. watching tv/movies with her is, like so many things, both delightful and somewhat terrifying. a random black man will cross the street in the background and she’ll start telling you what 80s sitcom he played the teacher’s assistant in.
i believe that is what thembi would call “good hair” gone bad…
oh my god, i never made the dorian (different world) – ivan (living single) connection! yeah, i remember his name on living single… i think “sophia” had a crush on him…
i used to have a crush on a guy named milton who worked at the video store in new haven, who looked exactly like clarence the so fine. if you’re out there somewhere milton, i’d love to add you to my myspace friends.
shout out to the grown men who still go by childhood names. thembi you’re a mess.
