Talk To Me: The Real Petey Greene Lovin’ Watermelon
Hitting theaters this week, Talk To Me stars the lovable Don Cheadle and the semi-wretched Taraji P. Henson (she was the girlfriend in Baby Boy, yech) in the biopic of tv/radio personality Petey Greene. I haven’t seen it yet but have been obsessed with this real Petey Greene video,”How to Eat Watermelon,” for a while now. He’s like some ol’ imaginary uncle of mine with that vest and Commodores haircut, making me question whether Don Cheadle could ever do such authentic country negritude justice. On the other hand, he’s sitting in one of those bamboo Huey Newton chairs while talking about watermelon in a disturbingly passionate way, kind of turning black power on its head. It’s definitely one of those black culture love-hate moments where I have to just say “we are who we are and I love it.” See for yourself.

this guy is totally kin to the guy in charge of “freshmints” at my Vacation Bible Summer School in the 80s. Of course, along with grape drink, there was watermelon (often seasoned with salt…and hot sauce, but I digress…) and if you DARED to leave ANY “pink” on the rind he would go ballistic, literally scooping it out of the trash, screaming, “dis pink hur a beeg waste!”
He would then cut out the “pink” with a knife, season it, and eat it, all the while staring at the kid who dared to “waste” like he was going to cut ‘em and eat their pink. I kid you not.
TALK TO ME is EXCELLENT. you gotta love Petey and the P-town he and Dewey built. Please go see it!
More importantly, Taraji Henson was ALSO the bottom bitch on Hustle and Flow. WHOOP THAT TRIIIIICKKKKKKKKKKK!!!
