Granny, Grandsons Busted for Drugs
Tuesday, 03 Jul 2007
Investigators are calling it a “family affair.” A grandmother and her two grandsons get busted for running a local drug operation out of the family home.
At the corner of 12th and Cumberland, kids spend their summer days working on their game at the local basketball courts. A few hundred feet away, police say 65 yr old Rema Motley, aka Rema Champion, was working on a different kind of game: drug dealing. Her teammates, believe it or not, were her 2 grandsons, say officers.
“In this case the grandmother played and active and deliberate role in the sale and delivery of narcotics,” said Inspector Aaron Horne of the city’s Narcotics Bureau.
Investigators from the narcotics strike force pounced on Motley and her two grandsons late last week. Jerome and Rashawn Champion got busted after police watched a drug customer make a purchase right outside the family’s home on North 12th Street.
“You get your actions and morals from your parents and your grandparents. In this case, you have a grandmother actively involved in helping her grandsons engage in criminal activity,” Horne said.
To make matters worse, narcotics investigators say one of Champion’s grandsons is on house arrest and wearing an electronic monitoring device on his ankle when he was busted.”we found thousands of dollars in crack cocaine and marijuana. In addition to that we also found some weapons in there,” Horne said.
Police say the drug customer who lead them to grandma and her two grandsons has …get this…13 prior arrests on drug charges.
