Fresh Black Girls: Jill Scott!

26 September 2007 4 Comments

Of all of the thick and nappy women that I have been told I look like (including Angie Stone, Macy Gray, and disturbingly enough, Tracy Chapman) Jilly from Philly is the ONLY name that I am happy to hear. I have accepted the fact that I’m not as pretty or talented or charismatic as Jill Scott (at least for now), but she is the type of Fresh Black Girl that would probably cuss me out for even thinking that I’m not as good as the next chick, even if the next chick is her. Almost anyone from Philly is at least somewhat fresh to me, as is almost any natural hair girl, as is almost any woman who is ok with the fact that she doesn’t conform to some light-straight-skinny standard of beauty but still knows she is beautiful and acts like it. In fact, Jill has consistently been like ‘well anyway, this is Jill, love it or leave it” as far as her body, fashion sense, hair, and music. Did I even mention the fact that her super fabulous music is like the thinking woman’s baby makin’/inspiration/sassy self-affirmation/reminisce about how much you wanted some guy music? Best of all to me is that her live show is a soulful, almost religious celebration of positivity without being corny or contrived, because she thanks God in one breath and talks about sippin Hypnotiq backstage in the next. That’s Phillychick Phreshness. Jill Scott’s latest album, The Real Thing hit stores yesterday.
