Thembi Week Begins!
On June 12, 2007, I realized that I should start a blog. I figured that I’d rant, share a little about my life and views, and of course highlight and criticize the beautiful and amorphous thing that is best known as “black pop culture.” At first, I had no idea what I could possibly talk about for more than a few days, but once I got into a little groove, and with the help of some great friends serving as my muses, I’ve since realized that even after a year I have barely scratched the surface. My goal has always been to write about things that the cool/smart kids notice but are reluctant to talk about because they’re of a ridiculous/nerdy/overly-specific/critical nature. Of course blogging has been a pain at times, a thankless unprofitable task, and an opportunity to draw criticism and comment spam from people who don’t even bother to identify themselves. But this blog has also provided me with an emotional outlet, the rediscovery of my love for writing and humor, and a much-needed sanctuary for at least a handful of people who “get it.”
That said, I hereby dub the week of June 8, 2008, “Thembi Week.” In addition to resuming regular posting after my month away, everyday I’m going to be giving out awards (most notably to myself), highlighting my favorite posts here and on other blogs in the Thembi family, praising commenters, and sharing a little more about myself than usual. I hope that all of you loyal readers represent in the comments section so that I know you’re still out there since I tend to measure my blogging success by how many comments I get and from whom. In fact, as usual, I’ll be counting on certain folks to throw in their witty two cents, especially if I call you out!
Is having “Thembi Week” self-aggrandizing and narcissistic? Um, YEAH, I’d say that it is. But for those of you who have been following along, even if only for a few weeks or months, you know that this is certainly something that Thembi would do.
