What The-?

4 August 2008 2 Comments

What kind of operation is blogger running? I logged on to post on Friday morning and was greeted with this:

Excuse me? Terms of Service violations? My blog may be deleted? Don’t. you. dare. Is Blogger throwing red text up there with the word “deleted” just to find out how long it will take my big body to hit the ground after I faint?

Of course I promptly clicked where I needed to click to avert at any threat to my baby. Apparently she was suspected of being a “Spam Blog.” What’s that, you ask?

“The ease of creating and updating webpages with Blogger has made it particularly prone to a form of behavior known as link spamming. Blogs engaged in this behavior are called spam blogs, and can be recognized by their irrelevant, repetitive, or nonsensical text, along with a large number of links, usually all pointing to a single site.”

Irrelevant, repetitive, nonsensical? Thems fightin’ words! Luckily after a weekend of nail-biting my blog was back up by this evening. Only then did I read Friday’s “Blogger Buzz” explaining “Spam Fridays,” a Blogger error that caused a bunch of blogs to be placed under review. At least they apologized.

That said I have some administrative things to take care of and need your help. For you fellow bloggers out there, have you been more successful with other platforms? Please comment. Also, can anyone recommend a good graphic designer? WWTD is in dire need of a complete overhaul.

Lastly, and I will harass you all about this repeatedly, the Black Weblog Awards nomination process has begun. Since I’m on a self-promotion kick I would really appreciate your support! I’m in a push to gather as many votes as I can for the category “Blog To Watch,” so I would love it if you would VOTE FOR ME HERE. Don’t be colored about it because voting ends pretty soon. And please, tell a friend!

Aw, “irrelevant”? That’s just adding insult to injury! Glad it worked out…

I like wordpress for a variety of reasons and cheerfully recommend it, but you must pay to get full control over your site design. I’ve got two blogs:
    * one on wordpress.com (free, but very limited design options*)
    * one on my own personal hosted space, using wordpress code (almost unlimited design and plugin options, but I pay for hosting)

*You can buy options like CSS customization for your whatever.wordpress.com blog, which I think comes out to being less expensive than your own full hosting package but still gives you luvly design flexibility. Or, spring for “whatwouldthembedo.com” and a hosting package… which would lead to a whole separate bunch of thoughts and recommendations.
