Black History Month Pop Culture Challenge Week 1: Answers

10 February 2009 2 Comments

Overall, you guys did great! There was some cheating that went on, but I’ve chosen not to blow spots quite yet. The quizzes will just get harder to Google up answers for, that’s all. Anyway, since I only got about 20 responses this week, I’m only going to shout out the top five. You can keep your own score but I’ll also have a record of it – anyone can take the lead at any time for the $100 prize!

1.  Joy – 110

George – 110

2. Courtney – 100

Woe – 100

3. Danielle – 95

Monica – 95

4. Duante – 85

5. Malcolm – 78

Here are the answers so the rest of you know how you did!

1. Photo ID. This is the cast of what 1970’s sitcom? (5 points)
mysteryshow

That’s My Mama

2. Government Names. Give me the popular name of each of these black music artists. (2 points each)

Maurice Young – Trick Daddy

Douglas Davis – Doug E. Fresh

Leslie Pridgen – Freeway

Tionne Watkins – T-Boz

Eleanora Fagan – Billie Holliday

3. Random Math: Take the number of Tops and multiply them by the number of “Heartbeats.” Subtract the number of original Wu-Tang members and add the number of Jodeci members. Show your work for partial credit! (5 points)

4 Tops x 5 Heartbeats – 9 Wu-Tangs + 4 Jodecis = 15

4. Six Degrees of Angela Bassett. You’ve heard of “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon?” This is the black version because lord knows Angela Bassett has worked just as much as he has! Connect Angela Bassett to another celebrity using movies, television, or music. Easy example: How can you connect Angela Bassett to Larenz Tate? One path is that she was in How Stella Got Her Groove Back with Taye Diggs, who was in The Best Man with Nia Long, who was in Love Jones with Larenz Tate. Remember you can use tv, movies, or music, but not relationships like who’s dated whom, etc.

Can you connect Angela Bassett to CCH Pounder? (10 points)

There are dozens of ways, the easiest is that they were both on ER.

5. The Token White Person. For each show, name the token white character. (2 points each)

The Wayans Brothers – White Mike

Martin – Shawn (Bob from Marketing was acceptable also)

227 – Dylan McMillian

The Parkers – Stevie

A Different World – Maggie or Matthew

6. Hip-Hop Quotable. Fill in the blanks, 2 points each. “This is protected by the red, the black, and the green, with the key on the road again, SISSY!” This was X-Clan’s famous catchphrase.

7. Who Am I? Name this woman and her 1960’s singing group. (10 points)

mysterywoman
Mary Wilson from The Supremes

8. Who Am I? At 7’2, this actor specialized in playing monsters and such. Name one of his characters and this actor’s real name (5 points each).

mysterymanwk1

This is Kevin Peter Hall, best known as Predator from Predator and Harry from Harry and The Hendersons. He was married to Alaina Reed Hall who played Rose on 227 both on the show and in real life. He died in 1991 after contracting AIDS from a blood transfusion.

9. The Obligatory Cosby Show Question. Name 5 friends of the Huxtable kids and which kid they were friends with.  They don’t have to be recurring characters (3 points each).

Rudy – Bud, Stanley, Peter, Deidre, Susan, etc.

Vanessa – Janet, Kara, Althea, etc.

Theo – Cockroach, Denny, Howard, Smitty, etc.

Denise -Suzanne, etc.

Sondra – Ted, Andy, etc.

10. Clear That Sample! The original song below was sampled for a hip-hop or r&b jam. Name the sampling artist and song. (15 points)

This song, “Dernier Domicile Connu” by François de Roubaix, was sampled by Missy Elliot for her 1999 single “All N My Grill” featuring Nicole Wray (what ever happened to her??) and Big Boi from Outkast. Lil’ Bow Wow also used this sample in 2001 for “That’s My Name,” featuring Snoop. Does this jog your memory?

EXTRA CREDIT: Bonus Reader Appreciation Question: What is Thembi’s favorite television show EVER? (10 points)

There were some good guesses and close ones, but the only show I have ever explicitly called my favorite is A Different World.

Ironically I’m reading a book on the history of Southern Hip-Hop, and apparently Trick Daddy comes from a family that’s been ensconced in the business side of things im Miami Bass and Hip-Hop for about 25 years now. Both Trick and his father were in jail at the same time in the early 90’s.

CCH Pounder costarred in Face/Off with John Travolta
Travolta starred in Swordfish with Halle Berry
Berry starred in Jungle Fever with Wesley Snipes
Snipes made a notable cameo in Waiting to Exhale opposite ANGELA BASSETT

Where are my points at? :)
