“What The Eff?” Wednesday: One Man’s Trash Guys . . . you know. . . we're all having tough times. Pinching pennies, tightening belts, and cutting open tubes of toothpaste for that last brush-worth instead of just tossing them isn't just thrifty, its mandatory. I've been using the same stick of deodorant until the plastic scratches my pits and banging ketchup bottles against the table before I dare open a new one. And yes, I'm rocking last year's flip-flops. But come on, yo. flipflopsebayflipflopWearing someone else's flip-flops is not simply a sure road to foot fungus, but its just downright nasty. Times are not tough enough

Obscure Black C-Lister Redux: Bumper Robinson brI've never needed to repeat a Black C-Lister profile because there are still dozens of random actors I need to point out and discuss. But thanks to VH-1's recent heavy rotation of 1992's The Jacksons: An American Dream I've caught a glimpse or two of the TV movie with fresh eyes lately. In fact don't get me to lyin' - I squeal with anticipation whenever it comes on.

I can barely tell if this is a Public Service Announcement or a commercial, but it definitely rubs me the wrong way. Funny or foul? I find the eye-bugging, neck-rolling, finger-waving black woman thing (halfway through having a weave sewn-in, no less) extremely tired, but there's something else bugging me about this commercial and I'm not sure what.

I must have Asia on the brain this week. Between yesterday’s post and a constant hankering for authentic kimchi like I had during my trip to Korea, I just can’t get enough of the Far East these days. Thanks …

“What The Eff?” Wednesday: Chinese Water Torture

You think black folks got problems getting into swimming pools these days? A heatwave is sweeping across parts of China bringing temperatures of over 104 degrees so folks over there have to cool off somehow. How about a cool and quiet day at the beach? Set up your umbrella and sprawl out on the soft sand...

No Brown Babies In The Pool? A Philadelphian’s Perspective. It all sounds pretty cut and dry to any of us who've heard of a little thing called racism, but as usual the media is leaving a few things out, and as a Philly chick with an opinion you know I've gotta give it...

Michael Jackson and The Five Stages of Grief: Acceptance

mj.jpg

Last week I told myself that Michael Jackson's memorial service would be the event to push me into the acceptance stage. Once I saw his golden casket and his brothers lined up in tribute I accepted that he is really gone. Here we are at the end of the line, and although theoretically the stages of grief can occur in any order and even cycle back and forth on top of themselves, acceptance is where we have to stay. It's not an easy thing to do, but

Michael Jackson and The Five Stages of Grief: Depression

I don't remember seeing Bambi, but I was about four years old when I saw Frosty The Snowman. My father was upstairs doing whatever adults do and heard a piercing scream come from the den. He rushed downstairs expecting to find a child with a cracked skull or a nail in her foot, but I was just sitting there, screaming and crying in one healthy piece. "What's wrong? What happened?" he asked. I poked my lip out and shouted: "FROSTY MELTED!!!!!!!!"

After screaming like a banshee for a few more minutes I started breathing normally again

Michael Jackson and The Five Stages of Grief: Bargaining

In the traditional sense, bargaining means making a “deal” with a higher power – for example, I’ll be a better person, I’ll trade XYZ, just let me live or bring my loved one back. In this case I’m sure we all agree that we’d ante up a few bucks for the Resurrect Michael Jackson Fund. As far as still-living pop singer currency I’d be willing to put up, say, FIFTYLEVEN Chris Browns and a bucket of R. Kellys for just one Michael Jackson. Since the weight of Michael's contributions is heavier than most of what we could possibly
