Here are the rules again:
In an effort to revitalize Black History Month for ‘09, I am conducting a Black History Month Pop Culture Trivia Challenge. Every Monday I will post a new set of trivia questions and you will have until the following Sunday evening at 8:00 pm to submit your answers to me via e-mail at quiz@whatwouldthembido.com. I will post the answers and the top 10 scores every Tuesday. The quiz will be cumulative, so anyone can take the lead at any time! The best part is, because I love my readers so much, the winner…

Overall, you guys did great! There was some cheating that went on, but I’ve chosen not to blow spots quite yet. The quizzes will just get harder to Google up answers for, that’s all. Anyway, since I only got about 20 responses this week, I’m only going to shout out the top five. You can keep your own score but I’ll also have a record of it – anyone can take the lead at any time for the $100 prize!
1. Joy – 110
George – 110
2. Courtney – 100
Woe – 100

Contest, Who is This? »

It’s a good thing that dopegirlfresh made a guess because if not for her every single person who bothered to comment would have nailed this (although Joy was first). The man to the right is Oran “Juice” Jones, Def Jam’s first platinum R&B artist thanks to his 1986 hit “The Rain.” The guy with the perm in the center is Mookie Jones, Oran’s successful rapper son. Whenever I do these “Who Am I?” posts you’d think the mystery man would be retired from the industry but…

This photo comes from another blog, and I’ll give the photographer credit as soon as someone can tell me who the two rappers on the left are. Each of them were a member of different 90’s hip-hop groups.

EDIT: Now, here we are over three months later and Niccolo finally got it. On the left is Chip-Fu from Fu-Schnickens, a group that takes the cake for most dated group concept ever (they must have literally sat around and decided who would be…

When I lived in France I learned that the French love R&B. My white roommate had a Montell Jordan CD and played it often, and my lil’ Cameroonian boyfriend Francois had every single CD that R. Kelly has ever made (including remix singles). Seriously, like a whole binder-full of them. Anyway, after one of his characteristic cheap dinner-dates, he broke out this guy’s album, and as I belted out every word he sincerely asked if I had considered trying out for Nouvelle Star (France’s version of American Idol). Oh, those good old days.
But for said R&B singer, the…

I didn’t watch a lot of music video back when this R&B group had its glory days, so maybe you’ll have an easier time recognizing them if you did. The only hint I’ll give for now is that they’re down one member.
HINT: Their biggest hit was made extra hot by an R&B legacy guest vocalist.
UPDATE: This was a tough one, so much so that the comments made me think one of y’all might break something trying to get it. Again, an anonymous commenter…
Contest, Hip Hop Is Dead., Who is This? »
In a WWTD first, this installment of “Who Am I” features someone who first charted during this century. Will this rapper do it again or is he already a one-hit wonder?
UPDATE: Posting anonymusly is all good, but it’s a shame that the first person to correctly guess that this is J-Kwon can’t properly get his/her contest win. Fortunately, besting Thembi’s trickery is its own reward, so pat yourself on your mystery back and keep it movin’.
Best comment…

I have some nerve even posting this. If you can remember what this 80’s group looked like back in the day let alone imagine what they’d look like after having aged 30 or so years, then you’ve sped right through impressive territory and into Oldhead Mental Illness-land. But I’m sure someone will get it…Hint: There used to be more of them, but the main ones are in this photo.
UPDATE: What’s funny is that I almost used a pic I found of Club Nouveau, which many…

Rather, who are WE? This 90’s group is still trying to be in the mix – with most of its original members, at that. Any ideas?
UPDATE: Gradmommy was first, but most of you saw through the layer of lost idealism to Another Bad Creation. They actually released an album in 2006, The Grady Baby Compliation (??), which failed to chart but you can give it a listen here. “Iesha” was a cute song, but “Playground,” shown below, still sounds…
