This Week’s Love/Hate Relationship With Black Pop Culture

I don’t usually start with something I hate, but as you’ve surely heard by now hip-hop legend Guru is having serious health issues and is in the hospital after a string of crises involving a heart attack, asthma attack, and coma. As if the unfortunate nature of these events isn’t enough, the internet is abuzz with accusations that his producer Solar (or “Superproducer Solar,” as he prefers to be called) is blocking the family’s access to Guru, didn’t even notify them that he’d been hospitalized for nearly a month before he went into a coma, and is currently making key…

“What The Eff?” Wednesday: Who Is Corey Johnson aka Musicorey?

People always ask me, “Thembi, how do you find this stuff?” Well, this week I’m going to walk you through the process because there is no reason why a perfectly sane woman such as myself should be asking any questions about Corey Johnson. Please bear with me as I take you through the tragically painful journey of discovering all there is to know about this person.

H-Town and Jodeci Are Back…Sort Of.

I don’t know who all has been anticipating H-Town’s comeback, especially since lead singer Dino died tragically in 2003. Oh, and that when Dino passed, H-Town was actually about to release their FOURTH album since their 1993 debut Fever For Da Flavor (yes, that is the one that had the ever-embarrassing “Knockin’ Da Boots,” on it). Since I don’t remember being excited about albums number two or three, I have to assume that H-Town still has a sturdy fan base that’s waiting to hear some fresh new love-makin’ music from the Houston Boys. But someone decided it would be a…

Good Hair Gone Bad Update: Devante Swing on Chris Brown and Rihanna

There are times when I just get all choked up with this magical combination of fear and extreme laughter, and this is almost one of those times. I’m not as much scared right now because I know Devante can’t hurt me, and I’m pretty much obligated at this point to keep y’all abreast of his whereabouts so it’s almost not even funny. I could care less what he thinks about Chris Brown and Rihanna; frankly reporters asking anyone’s opinion on the matter are only hoping for the kind of damning slip-up that only a cracked out crooner with…

Lord have mercy. You know I love to provide thorough investigations of light & curly hotties from back in the day who have now lost their paths in life, and the “Good Hair Gone Bad: Debarge” installment is still one of my favorite posts. Sadly, I have an update for the archives. El Debarge was arrested earlier this month for possession of a controlled substance, most likely some form of stimulant considering I’ve never once…

We’ve been on Devante Watch for quite some time around here, but we haven’t had much to say about the often visible and always crackified K-Ci and JoJo. Here we have a clip from their concert this weekend in Sydney, Australia. The key moment is at about one minute, fifty seconds in.

Did that nigga just pass out? And did the other nigga just keep on singin’? Someone please call Mr. Dalvin so he can spearhead a group intervention for the entire Jodeci camp.

UPDATE: K-Ci’s radio interview response. Somethin’ just aint right…

Gary Dourdan has a pretty significant history on this blog and has brought me more pageviews through Google Search than almost anyone, so maybe I’m a bit biased. But something about this photo strikes me as disturbing. Can I get some help here?

After the meaningless nonsense of the past few days, in fact, past few years, I’ve finally accepted that Black Love is in a bit of trouble. I ADORE Black Love itself – as corny as it may sound, there’s something so intensely beautiful about the concept that has made me seek it almost exclusively. At my age I’m finally trying to take the idea of settling down seriously, but my usual approach to life has not been cutting the mustard. I’m far from desperate and haven’t had much trouble catching who I want. But I believe in fate, luck…

Over the last year a few pieces of random interweb trash have popped out of the woodwork and, in impressively poor English, tried to tell me all about myself. I tend to ignore the few negative comments I get because I believe that my blogging time should be reserved for drumming up new ways to disturb/amuse you, not for schooling the illiterate. But today I am finally going to let a few of them have it and I hope that you augment your cosign by reading the original post if you missed it the first time!

This has been a crazy week for me, so posting has been slow, but a few things have happened that have made me consider a new career as a psychic.

On March 20, I posted a video of Pauly Shore’s contrived racist rant and asked, “Is this the new battle cry of the white “has-been/never-really-was?” On May 1, Jon Lovitz used the Reverend Wright controversy to tell some dry and inappropriate jokes about AIDS and black people…at an AIDS benefit. If you want to see, check here.

On October 10, my “What The Eff?” Wednesday post…
