I’m not going to break out a poll for this one. I’m just sharing this image to try and wrap my own head around it because while I don’t consider Australian Aborigines “black,” I watched Spike Lee’s Bamboozled last night, maybe I’m being a little sensitive, and I’d love to hear your opinions.

As a little girl (and for that matter, as a teenager) I was so self-conscious about letting people see me dance. I think it all goes back to fourth grade, when I was in non-optional after-school jazz and tap classes. Although I possessed natural rhythm, the little outfit that they forced me to wear just wasn’t appropriate for my chubbiness, and after getting teased by a few seventh graders I pretty much put my dance aspirations to rest. The sting still remains, but in adulthood I’ve miraculously lost the ability to be embarrassed, and as a consequence tend to have…

My favorite thing about it all is that there’s a dude dancing right behind him who would be a fascinating spectacle if only he weren’t being shown up by the one in the t-shirt with the ventilation holes.

Laugh if you must (and you will), but I’m sure that this man can say that he truly knows joy…

The only way for me to get back into the blogging saddle after my much-needed hiatus is with some white people dancing tastiness. Yummmmm!

I know it seems like I always keep it real but there are too many little secrets about myself that people aren’t aware of just because they prove that I’m not “cool.”  The blackgirl acceptance theme of this blog’s title has made me realize that I need to live my Lady Law #2 – “Go where no black girl has gone before” – a little more publicly. Sarah Palin was on SNL this weekend. She is not funny. She “raised the roof,” further fueling the stereotype that white people over 40 have difficulty letting go of urban expressions (can I get a “Whoomp there it is”?). She sort of did the cabbage patch and poked her lips out like a black person, the epitome of the “white people dancing” phenomenon yet somehow depressing instead of endearing. This is the downhill part of the aforementioned roller coaster.

I’m just too old for anything aimed at the MTV generation, and as much as I’d love to support that cutie pie Tristan Wilds as his career gets bigtime and mainstream, there’s just too much of the orginal 90210 in my head for me to get into the updated version.
